Dr Michelle Karume is an assistant professor, speaker and psychotherapist. She is passionate about Marriage and Family Therapy, Medical Family Therapy, Collaborative Care and Program Development; and strongly believes that the family unit is the training ground for life and healthy relationships. Dr Oscar Githua is also a speaker, forensic psychologist and an assistant professor of psychology with extensive professional experience both locally and internationally. He has worked with various non-governmental organisations, government agencies and private establishments leading evidence-based interventions.
With over 40 years of lecturing, speaking and counselling between them they have come together to help counter what they describe as a growing epidemic amongst people today –depression and suicide.

In this module, Drs Michelle & Oscar explain the effect of depression on one’s life, relationships, social obligations and work productivity.
MODULE 4 – HOW TO MANAGE DEPRESSION FOR YOURSELF AND OTHERS
This lesson explains the importance of talking to someone, healthcare and professional options available.
MODULE 5 – SUICIDE
Undoubtedly the most costly consequence of depression. In this module, Drs Michelle & Oscar explain the risk and protective factors. And how it also impacts gender differently.
MODULE 6 – IMMINENCE OF THE THREAT
In this lesson, we learn about the various stages from ideation, intent, plan and means. And also understand the spectrum of ‘checking out’.
MODULE 7 – HOW TO INTERVENE
In this module, Drs Michelle & Oscar breakdown the most effective strategies for intervening for oneself and for others.
MODULE 8 – ETHICAL AND LEGAL IMPLICATIONS
In this module, the Doctors share critical information on involuntary hospitalization and detail on the health care system.
MODULE 9 – MANAGING LIFE STRESS
In this final module, Dr Michelle and Dr Oscar explain the concept of mental hygiene, the importance of self-care, positive thinking and resilience.
